The Port of Melbourne (PoM) is Australia’s largest container and multi-cargo landlord port, handling 2.7 million TEU p.a. or ~37% of Australian container traffic. Located in the Melbourne CBD, PoM is a large-scale asset subject to light handed regulation, encompassing 515 hectares of port land, 36 commercial berths and over 20 km of waterfront.

In September 2016, the GIP Australia Fund (“GIPA”), together with a number of GIPA Co-Investors, entered into an agreement to acquire a ~40% equity stake in the 50-year lease of PoM from the State Government of Victoria, alongside our consortium partners Future Fund, QIC and OMERS. The transaction was successfully closed on October 31, 2016 and represents GIPA’s first investment.
